About Commission



The Government of Tamil Nadu vide notification issued in G.O.Ms.No.988 Public (Estt. I & Legislation) Department dated 07.10.2005 constituted the Tamil Nadu Information Commission consisting of one State Chief Information Commissioner and two State Information Commissioners initially. The strength of the State Information Commissioners were subsequently raised from two to six vide Government Order in G.O.Ms.No.72, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (AR-III) Department dated 10.04.2008.


Under Section 15(3) of the RTI Act, 2005 Thiru R.Rajagopal, IAS (Retd.) was appointed as the State Chief Information Commissioner vide G.O.(Ms).No.180, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (AR-III) Department dated 18.11.2019. He was administered oath of office on 21.11.2019 by the Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu Thiru.Banwarilal Purohit.

Thiru.S.Selvaraj, Thiru.S.T.Tamilkumar, Dr.R.Pratapkumar and Thiru.S.Muthuraj were appointed as State Information Commissioners vide G.O.(Ms).No.151, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (AR-III) Department dated 30.11.2017. They were administered oath of office on 08.12.2017 by the Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu Thiru.Banwarilal Purohit. Thiru.P. Dhanasekaran and Thiru. M. Sreedhar were appointed as State Information Commissioners vide G.O.(Ms).No.19, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (AR-III) Department dated: 16.02.2021. They were administered oath of office on 18.02.2021 by the Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu Thiru.Banwarilal Purohit.

Head Quarters of the Tamil Nadu Information Commission


During the year 2020, the Tamil Nadu Information Commission from a rented building owned by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at No.2, Theagaraya Road, Teynampet, Chennai – 600 018. To trace the various locations from where the Information Commission functioned from 2006, the details are as follows:

In G.O.(Ms.) No.103, Personnel & Administrative Reforms (AR-III) Department, dated 31.07.2019, the Government accorded sanction for a sum of Rs. 27.79 Crores (Rupees Twenty Seven Crores and Seventy Nine Lakhs only) towards construction of the office building for Tamil Nadu Information Commission at Farm Village, Pernpet in Nandanam, Chennai-35. From 01.05.2021, the Tamil Nadu Information Commission is functioning in its own building.
